March 1 report

Got invited to fish with some Captain friends today Shane and Dave and we had a nice day on the lake started around noon and ran all over to find water clean enough to catch. We found some and put some nice fish in the boat. Great start to 2023 and what a nice day 60 degrees amazing for March 1. I will be fishing again tomorrow and starting my charter season next week. Today was bandits and p10’s 1.2-1.4 mph 20/20 on p10’s and 120 no weights on bandits no color stood out.

2023 Lake Erie Walleye Outlook

Call it Cabin Fever. Thought I’d share two short pieces of info on the Walleye fishery in Lake Erie. The first is a good one page condensed info pamphlet from ODW. The second is from DÂ’ARCY EGAN, a well known Ohio outdoors writer. Both tell us the Lake Erie walleye fishery is in great shape and will be for years to come, as long as something crazy doesn’t happen.

There is so much information now on the Lake and the fishery. It has expanded nearly exponentially over the last 10 years. I hope to help make all this info make sense for the typical walleye fisherfolk.

Red Wing Blackbirds in Lake Marshes – Early Spring?

Looked at the bird counts for Ottawa County from the Great Backyard Bird Count. Two dozen Red Wing Blackbirds and two Greenwing Teal sighted in a marsh on north side of Sandusky Bay. On February 20!

Now I know there are always a few birds ahead of the rest, but Red Wing Blackbirds, an annual sign of spring, as far north as Lake Erie on February 20?! And Green Wing Teal?

I don’t want to “jump the gun” here, but it sure doesn’t feel like winter out there and yes the the 14 day forecast isn’t spring-like, but maybe after that? The wildlife telling us somethig?

Chemicals in the water

I know this is not a news forum but I am in Indiana and just concerned about all the issues going on close to Lake Erie. I hear about all the train derailing and an explosion just a few miles away and just want to hear from some local people (instead of talking heads) if they think any of this will have an effect on the lake and the fish?

Huron 2/11

Great day on the lake yesterday. Bandits blue chrome 20/20 at 1.1 to 1.3 was the ticket to 15 nice walleye. We kept 12 and released the others. When the bite slowed, I set the auto pilot to s-turns and it triggered bites. 5 star day on the lake!
