Im thinking about going out of huron tomorrow. Just wondering if the ice is gone. The huron river web cam shows it is clear but not sure how far up river it melted

What is the Walleye Drop? It’s one of Western Lake Erie’s most iconic New Year’s Eve celebrations. In Port Clinton, “The Walleye Capital of the World”, the annual Walleye Drop will be streamed live by Buckeye Drone starting at 9pm

During Walleye Madness @ Midnight, Wylie Walleye the mascot of Port Clinton will drop from the sky to kick off the New Year, followed by a fireworks display over the waters of Lake Erie.

The brand new LED lighted Wylie Jr, a 20-foot-long, 600-pound fiberglass Walleye, has been ushering in the New Year in Port Clinton since the 1997. Back then Wylie was made simply of paper mache, now 26yrs later 1000’s brave the cold and gather to await Wylie Jr to descend as a New Year begins.

This event has got so big they are simulcast on split screen with the Times Square New Year’s Ball in New York City.

I joined JohnN and his brother on their boat out of Huron this first day of winter. The five boats that went out before we got there this morning salted the ramp and dock, so we lightly salted also.
As soon as we saw some good marks on the Hook screen, we selected the rods, and quickly put out the ones that already had green flicker minnows attached, then added a couple of other lures, including a Bandit Taco Salad. Those lures mentioned were the most productive,as we marked our waypoints, then trolled back on tracks close to the previous course(s). We finished after noon, with 3 man limit of a nice, well-fed walleyes.

We have used Church walleye boards and a few other brands. But have yet to find a great planer board that will release easily and will fall in behind the boat for retrieval without diving below the surface. Without purchasing and trying a multitude of other brands, just looking for suggestions on a board that routinely works good for this method while pulling cranks. Thank you.

I’m looking to get a setup of trolling rods. Any particular rod/brand recommendations? I would be planning on using them for both dipsey’s and boards.

Launched by myself out of Mazurik’s yesterday morning before the sun came up. There were three other boats heading out, who all went west, but I went east because I got into some good fish recently near the CP dump. The water was glass, and it was misty with no sign of the sun making an appearance through the clouds. I didn’t see much near the dump, so I went SE where I had some waypoints saved. It didn’t take too long before the graph was showing good marks so I stopped and went to deploy the Ulterra. Lately it’s been refusing to start, with the annoying single beep and light flash. Never fails on the trailer but is moody on the water. I decided not to deal with it and used the kicker by itself. The water was so calm and there was zero wind so it was pretty easy to control the boat. I put out bandits on offshore boards, managed to keep my speed 1.6-2.0 and had a limit in less than two hours. During that time I also lost THREE at the boat, and one was huge. Fish story, I know, but I did land one that was 8# and the shoulders on the one that decided to not go into the net were remarkably broader. Anyway, Bandits with white body and red head were irresistible. Twice I was letting them out and as soon as it got to 75′ (unassisted), I went to put the board on and realized they already had a fish on. I was marking fish between 15-30′ down, in 36 FOW, and the biggest ones came at 75 back, unassisted, farthest from the boat. Watching two flags go down as I am reeling in a big fish is a rush that I hope I never develop a tolerance to.

Thanks to all of you on these forums who share your experiences and wealth of knowledge with those of us who are just getting started. Heck, are fortunate enough to have charter boat Captains (Juls!:)) on here who basically share their recipes with us for…free. I hate to think that the one a-hole, who had the nerve to demand more details than were given in a post, chased off Capt Pork Chop for good.

JohnN invited me to fish with him out of Huron public launch this morning. The north dock has been removed, the south dock is still in. I had my box of lures to pick out on the port side, while John had his to pick out and choose depths on the starboard side.

We fished mostly Bandits in 30 – 36 f.o.w., from 55 – 80 back, @ 1.5 m.p.h. As the bite slowed, we made a few turns, changed a few colors and ran them a little further back or added 2 oz. weights, then decided to change course to mark more fish. Finished before noon with a dozen nice size walleye, Each of us had an Orange Crush working well the latter part of the morning, as we exchanged lot of ideas and tactics to make this a memorable outing for 2 followers of W.L.E. Fishing Reports.

Walleyes for wounded heroes is an local organization that 100% of donations go towards our fishing events. We have no paid staff and all funds raised are used for our events we run on Lake Erie for wounded heroes. Last June our event hosted 120 wounded heroes for 5 days and we provide housing, food, entertainment, and boats for the heroes to enjoy the fishing and camaraderie that Lake Erie has to offer. Our captains not only provide us with over 50 boats for the June even we also run a October event for 25 heroes along with donating a trip for us to raffle off. The entire month of April we will be giving away a trip a day and the tickets are $20 or 3 for $50. Right now you can purchase them online at Walleyes For Wounded Heroes select the donate button and you will see a drop down that allows you to select the tickets. Once purchased you will receive a picture of your ticket. There are only 1000 tickets being sold and it goes off the Ohio pick 3 evening drawing (or day drawing if not a winner).

Erie Outfitters and Bays Edge Bait and tackle will both be carrying tickets for sale thanks to both of those for supporting us both with ticket sales as well as helping with our events. Please look to them for your tackle needs I know many of use appreciate what they do for our fishing community.

Also our June event is open right now for registration if you know of a wounded hero that would like to attend please encourage them to apply. We want new faces every year last year we had 23 states represented by attendees (and even 2 from puerto rico).
