Lund Impact 1875

Is anyone running the Lund Impact 1875 with 150 on Lake Erie. If so, how does it handle adverse conditions? Do you feel safe under most conditions? I will look forward to any response and assistance.

Early April

Well, the cabin fever seems to remain pretty steady for me with the uncertainty I see of cold weather forecasts, high winds, muddy water and reports of debris. The lake looks like chocolate milk now according to NOAA. I’m checking the sites every day…LOL. I noticed mentions in previous posts by Slim and Coho that early April was typically very good. So, I booked a room for the first week returning home on Easter Sunday. I enjoyed sharing info last year with a couple good folks on this forum like Markle and Kingfisher22. If anyone is interested in a little info exchange during that week in April, just let me know. I’ll offer up my celll #. Also, thank you again so much to the Captains here who continue to offer so much to us on where to start and what is working!
What a fishery. Tight lines and safe fishing to everyone!

March 03/04 Gale wind direction change effect

Here’s an add-on to the first Gale post.

Below is the wind direction and speed from last night (Marblehead Station). The wind direction changed 90 degrees+, from NE to NW, in four hours, and it’s speed was the same. Around 30 knots from the NE to 30 knots from the NW. In 4 hours. The transition took about 2 1/2 hours.

Imagine what that did to the Lake currents, all through the water column. The Lake water is close to the same temperature right now, so there is little barrier to the water mixing and moving. The entire Western Basin, and the nearshore areas of the south shore of the Central Basin, will probably take a minimum of a week to really start to recover from this. A lot depends on the winds over the next week. The only thing that is certain is the fishing for the near term is probably going to be… well you can come up with your favorite word for “bad to terrible”.

03/03 6:00 pm Wind Direction NE Wind Speed Knots 29.9 Gusts 42.0
03/03 9:36 pm Wind Direction ENE Wind Speed Knots 11.1 Gusts 20.0
03/03 9:42 pm Wind Direction NE Wind Speed Knots 12.0 Gusts 17.1
03/03 9:48 pm Wind Direction N Wind Speed Knots 14.0 Gusts 24.1
03/03 9:54 pm Wind Direction NW Wind Speed Knots 18.1 Gusts 25.1
03/03 10:00 pm Wind Direction NNW Wind Speed Knots 20.0 Gusts 24.1
03/04 12:00 am Wind Direction NW Wind Speed Knots 28.0 Gusts 33.0

The wind speed started to really drop around 6am this morning. As of 8:30 this morning it was 8 knots from the WNW.

Add to this all the rain runnoff coming in from the rivers, and it looks to be a mess for quite awhile.

Boo.

March 03 afternoon / night Gale Warning effect

From NOAA Weather, Friday morning, March 03:

“LAKESHORE FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 4 AM EST SATURDAY
East to northeast gales of around 35 knots with gusts of 45 to 50 knots and waves of 6 to 11 feet are anticipated in the western basin of Lake Erie this afternoon and evening. As a result, water levels at Toledo may rise to 80 inches above low water datum late this afternoon into this evening. This may cause flooding of marinas and other low-lying areas around Metzer Marsh.”

Kinda a repeat of the big flood of Spring 2021 (Memorial Day Weekend?), except the Lake Water level is down from the record highs that year.

This, along with all the chocolate milk flowing in from the Maumme, Portage, and Sandusky Rivers should really muddy up the Western Basin for some time (saw the Maumee yesterday – high flow and really muddy).

Yuk.

March 1 report

Got invited to fish with some Captain friends today Shane and Dave and we had a nice day on the lake started around noon and ran all over to find water clean enough to catch. We found some and put some nice fish in the boat. Great start to 2023 and what a nice day 60 degrees amazing for March 1. I will be fishing again tomorrow and starting my charter season next week. Today was bandits and p10’s 1.2-1.4 mph 20/20 on p10’s and 120 no weights on bandits no color stood out.

2023 Lake Erie Walleye Outlook

Call it Cabin Fever. Thought I’d share two short pieces of info on the Walleye fishery in Lake Erie. The first is a good one page condensed info pamphlet from ODW. The second is from DÂ’ARCY EGAN, a well known Ohio outdoors writer. Both tell us the Lake Erie walleye fishery is in great shape and will be for years to come, as long as something crazy doesn’t happen.

There is so much information now on the Lake and the fishery. It has expanded nearly exponentially over the last 10 years. I hope to help make all this info make sense for the typical walleye fisherfolk.
